Rudolf Steiner , Austria

From 1913 on a number of ancillary buildings and residences arose in the vicinity of the Goetheanum. For most of them Steiner himself prepared a sketch drawing or model. It was important for him to give each building its own individual character and at the same time create a relationship between the various buildings. In the case of purpose built utilities such as the heating tower and the transformer station, he wanted the design to express its function. The resulting motif permeates and metamorphoses everywhere throughout the whole building, right down to its windows and doors.

The residences too have their own, independent character, which from the inside was determined by their respective owners but from the outside was formed by their geographic location and their relationship to the Goetheanum.
Thus Steiner’s ancillary buildings are an expression of the social ideal and conscious balance between the individual and the community.
