The conception of a house should consider the organic interrelationships of the people who are meant to live in it.

The severe post war housing shortage forced many European cities to initiate large scale accommodation projects. In many cases this led to homogenous suburbs without variety or individuality.

In Scharoun’s housing designs, top priority was placed on the needs of the family and the individual. They are characterized accordingly through their differentiated structures and lively designs.

An example of this can be seen in Romeo and Julia,  two high-rise residential towers in Stuttgart, whose lower levels are given over to shops and small businesses. Above these rise the residential flats with their generous floor plans and roofed balconies. In the top levels the flats are recessed to allow for  roomy rooftop terraces.
