Portus-Bau , Germany

The building is situated at the central historic axis of Kassel, the Wilhelmshöher Allee, which dates back to Baroque times. It includes a 600 seat hall for conferences and cultural events, as well as a high school for the social sciences and some shops.

The inspiration for the building is the hexagonal basalt column from the environs of Kassel, which was made famous through Joseph Beuys. It represents an attempt to anchor the building within the ambience of the local town architecture.

The internal lounges are placed in a mainly symmetrical arrangement, which challenges one to become more concentrated. In contrast to this the narrowing and widening passages are characterized by a spatial dynamic. The colour-scheme is tuned to this formative principle. The lounges are kept in one basic colour while the passages and staircases show a range of different colour schemes.
