The newly constructed Catholic Theological College is a lively expression of the ideals and intended aims of its students and courses. It represents the different aspects of Catholicism in modern society and at the same time is a source of inspiration for the development of a center in Melbourne.

This challenge became a greater one still by the fact that the new building, which housed the library, administration and offices, was to be joined with a high, neo-gothic building dating from 1870, in which the teaching took place and which contained a chapel.

The resulting design intends for the old and the new to dynamically complement each other. The stability and formality of the old and the flexibility of the new allow the past and future to be present simultaneously. The two buildings are coupled through a transparent, curved section, which allows the new to be respectfully joined with and in a way grow out of the old.
