The flats at Fraenkelufer were built as a social residential development in connection with the 1987 International  Building Exhibition in Berlin. The concept is based on a changing streetscape whose variety is characteristic of Kreuzberg. Behind the street facades are inner courtyards which are set aside for flats, schools and businesses.

The inner yard and garden, bounded by surrounding flats, is serving as an extension of living space. The arrangement of flats and external spaces is not defined by a particular function but creates the possibility for a variety of activities.

The floor plans of the new flats are conceived to create lines of sight that make possible an experience of spatial relationships reminiscent of the atmosphere emanating from older buildings.
